As I wandered along the streets of Cannes, reflecting on the pleasure of taking a two-week break under the azure skies of the French Riviera, I caught sight of something that immediately switched me back into my inquisitive journalist mode. Turning into the Boulevard Carnot, I spotted a tall, narrow building with a richly decorated, semi-circular façade. However, it was not so much the Belle Epoque architecture that caught my eye, but the lettering on the large sign attached to one of its curved balconies. There, in bold golden letters, were the words 'Cavendish Hotel'...

As we ascended a wooden lift, which was first installed in the 1920's, receptionist Emmanuelle told me what she knew about the history of the hotel. The building was constructed in 1897, along  with an identical structure on the opposite side of the Boulevard Carnot, as part of the ongoing development of Cannes as a resort. After functioning as a grand private residence, or possibly as a suite of elegant apartments, it was converted into a hotel in 1923, when it acquired the name 'Le Cavendish'. 

                                                             

Christine and Guy Welter bought the building in 2000 and immediately set about refurbishing it in the style of a demeure, so that guests might feel that they were staying in a private residence rather than a hotel. Having preserved the distinctive façade, which is listed as a monument historique, and restored both the vintage lift and the beautiful Carrera marble staircase, they installed modern conveniences in all the rooms and redecorated them in the manner of a deluxe Riviera property of the Belle Epoque.

 

 

 

abc-luxe.com     Le plan lumière consiste à mettre en valeur l’ensemble des quartiers de Cannes, ses monuments, ses belles façades, ses statues, et jardins qui constituent le patrimoine cannois. Avec sa façade datant du début du siècle dernier et classée monument historique, l’hôtel 4 étoiles. Le Cavendish a ainsi été sélectionné pour faire partie du plan lumière, été comme hiver. L’éclairage porté sur Le Cavendish met particulièrement en valeur l’esthétisme du bâtiment Rotonde et de la façade Belle Epoque. Construit en 1897, l’hôtel fut pendant longtemps le lieu prisé par une clientèle aristocratique. Entièrement rénové et baptisé Le Cavendish en hommage au britannique Lord Cavendish qui y demeura de nombreuses années, l’hôtel préserve à l’extérieur comme à l’intérieur son authenticité. L’ascenseur d’époque (1920) et le magnifique escalier de marbre de Carrara donnent à l’ensemble un charme suranné. Rouvert en 2001 par Christine et Guy Welter, le « boutique hôtel » Le Cavendish accueille ses hôtes « comme à la maison » dans une atmosphère intime, doté d’un service irréprochable séduisant les voyageurs en quête de charme et d’élégance.
